I just finished my first rebuild , a 1984 351w, installed in a1948 f1. My knowledge on electrical basics is almost nonexistent. I need advice on all the basics required to get the engine running. I purchased a book on rebuilding small block Fords but it provides nothing On electrical.
so far I managed to get engine to turn over with the starter. I need info how to connect alternator, coil, starter, distributor, etc Is he key to all these confection's found in the wiring harness? What Year wiring harness will work for 1984 351w if I'm Sorry this is so long but my knowledge is so short. I'm not sure that the engine even has a coil. I started with a junk yard engine with no wiring any help will be appreciated

The wiring 101 Thread is a good one. It shows the generic engine hook ups for you and explains how to build your own harness if you want to.
If not the EZ harnesses are very popular.
I try as hard as I can to disuede people from installing used harnesses. They are diffuicult to manage, difficult to trace, difficult to fit, and using old wire is like asking for trouble.
Rewiring is a very easy process, using an old harness will make it 10 times more difficult than it has to be.
Tradster just redid his truck with a REBEL kit an liked it, and lots of folks are using EZ and painless kits. There's about 5 or 6 people at the moment rewiring from scratch.
So thre's plenty of advice. Read through the "101" thread and if you have any questions or need more help feel free to send me a PM or e-mail anytime.
BTW, you wiring is oriented more around your truck type and year than the engine type and year. You actually only have as few as 4 and and many as 7 wires for your engine itself. The charge, start, and distribution systems are more a function of the truck.
I have a "sort of" follow up question. I just rewired with a stock harness for my F-1 flathead. Could I re-use that harness for a 12V conversion and windsor swap? I know I'd have to address the gauges if I stayed with original, and likely have to swap the voltage regulator. Anything else?
Please read through the "Wiring 101" thread. My post #55 explains 12 volt conversion. What engine you use is irrelevant unless you have EFI or something of that nature. And of course there are variables mostly in the type of alternator/generator you pick.
Well, I typed and planted the posts about every two days, and there are member comments inserted along the way. So what you are looking for is probably farther down. If you are the person who asked me about 12 volt conversion (I answer 20 peoples e-mails about this stuff daily) 12 volt conversion is on Post #55.
If you aren't one of the folks I've sent it to already, write me an e-mail at babbiebuddie@***.net and I'll send you the complete MS Word Version without all the commentary. The formatting is much cleaner as well.
Make sure I have your e-mail address because I have to forward the last one I sent with the attachemnts....I can't simply reply.
