I checked my radiator fluid yesterday morning and there was a lot of rust in it. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be from? Should I go ahead and replace the trans cooler and radiator at the same time just to be safe?
There could be differing levels of safe. The safest might be to buy a new ford truck.
Is there any symptom of overheating?
Consider flushing the cooling system, taking the radiator to be cleaned out at the radiator shop, refilling with the proper mix of antifreeze and water.
are you talking about rust particles or just rust colored? If its just rust colored then your antifreeze mixture probably got a little watered down . If you run with a name brand anti freeze they all have some type of rust preventer. I would also keep an eye on your water pump some times they get rusty with age.
Oxidation in the cooling system is a naturally occurring event in ANY water-based coolant that runs through steel/iron engine blocks. The negative charge that exists in the block from the electrical system doesn't do you any favors either.
Now, extreme amounts of it... to the point where it is visible in the coolant or actually colors the coolant... is a pretty sure sign that the system had been run with the wrong mixture of coolant to water and without enough fluid for a long enough time to allow oxidation to occur in the air pockets that are present in a cooling system that is not properly filled. Check for leaks under pressure (engine hot). Let it cool down. Drain, flush and refill the system.
