E4OD issues HELP

love the site!!! 97 PSD 250 4x4 E40D ext cab longbed 155000 miles. OD goes on and off all by itself when ever it feels like it. Dealer can't pull codes, its not flashing. They think solinoide pack or PCM. It shifts and runs good, just has fits with OD. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! Already checked all plugs and pins from firewall to tranny.

Is it possible that the wire in the column is getting hung up or pinched. I know when i bought my truck. The wire was cut in the column. The button was broke off as well. Just a thought. Maybe take the column apart and trace the wire down from the selector and see if its loose or something.

Thanks for the quick responce! I did have the column apart three times already and replaced the switch in the end of the shifter. Saw all the wires except where they are in the rod itself. No rubs, cuts, or pinches. I'm about ready to find a 5 speed!!

Check the VSS? (Vehicle Speed Sensor) on the rear diff. Pull it out and clean it off with a clean cloth, then re-install. Check that wiring for wear also.

Ok VSS clean no differance. Dam! DYK will a PCM out of a 2wd same engine work in a 4wd? just to see if the OD thing goes away. Also DYK which solinoide in the E4OD is for the OD, and can it be accessed through the pan, and be purchased indivdually?

Have you checked the TRS?
What speeds do you see the issue at?

Plug looks good on TRS, happens at any speed, wet, dry, smooth ,bumpy. Even when the key is on and engine is off. I haven't been able to pinpoint any similarities at any of the times this happens. Its just plain wierd!

Try changing out the vss sensor, even if it looks ok,but get it from the ford dealer, about $35.00,sometimes they can be bad even if it looks good.

New VSS installed, same problem, seems to happen more when trans is hot. will a solinoide stick? Sometimes when it kicks out of OD if I push the button 10 or 15 times fast it will go out but then kicks right back out again.
