My '88 300-6 started missing about a week ago. I changed the spark plugs, and it still does it. What should I look for? It only seems to do it at about 1800-2100-rpms and only when I put a lot of load on it.
Please help
Thanks
Lars
Check your timming and check your advance mechanism. When was the last time you cleaned out and lubed your distributor. You might also want to check the coil.
This condition occurs when you lose or "leak" spark energy. This energy is usually lost through ign wires with poor insulation. Although it can occur with a cracked cap, coil, etc. The air itself becomes a conductor to move the spark. One of the dead giveaways is that it will always be worse on a humid day as the extra moisture helps the air conduct the energy. The reason that it's worse under load is that electricity always seeks the past of least resistance. When the work in the cylinder becomes too hard it just finds a weaker path.
Try popping your hood with the engine running in a very dark place. Sometimes you can see the ign. wires glowing a funky blue-green. This is the gasses in the air becoming excited by all the lost energy. Just like how neon signs work.
The solution is simple, replace the wires and examine the cap, coil, etc for cracks and/or other places wayward spark might choose to go.
I changed the distributor cap and plug wires. I made it better but still seems to miss when I am going slow and floor it. What do you think it could be? I didn't mess with the timing when it happend. It just started one day.
Thanks
