oil pressure problem

We recently did some work on our '84 F350 one ton. It has a 351 Cleveland it it with about 166,000? Sludge was cleaned out but since then the original gauge showed no oil pressure and at one point we could hear noise. We then ran sludge remover through the engine (with oil) for about 15-20 min. Drained it and put in new oil and filter. Previous to this change we installed a pressure gauge that showed no pressure at an idle after warming up. Now it shows 5-10 at an idle when warm. However there is not lifter, etc. noise. It sounds and runs like it did a month ago. I can't say that I feel real confident about gauges made today. However we don't have another older one to try. Any thoughts? We know this truck and would prefer not to start over with another one. Engines are very hard to come by. It is not used daily, but for pulling a horse trailer or having a camper on it and things that require larger/heavier carrying capacity.

Why did you use a sludge remover and what did you use? 15-20 min isn't very long and was that driving or at idle? What does the gauge show when driving? As long as there is pressure at idle, it should/will be fine. Gauge: aftermarket or OEM Ford? Was the oil-line feed to the gauge cleaned out?

I believe it was made by Gunk and it recommended 5 min. at an idle. When driving or reving the gauge goes up to 20 or more depending on what you are doing. The dash gauge is disconnected and an under dash one installed. Yes the oil-line feed was cleaned. Everything that could be reach without total dismantling.

Oil pressure for the 351W engine is 40-65lbs Hot @ 2000rpm. For the 351M it's 50-75lbs Hot @ 2000rpm. These specs are out of the '81 Ford Engine Shop Manual

We will try it and see what happens. How long should it run with sludge remover in it either at an idle or driving? Do you know the oil pressure for a 351 Cleveland? Thank you.
We tried another gauge and it shows 10 at an idle.

351M is the 'Cleveland' engine. If you are running the Gunk in oil and getting it to NOT(normal operating temp) I'd drive it on the highway for 15-20mi then drain/change the filter. The 351 Cleveland engine was not made after '74.

I've always found that engine interior cleaning garbage was just that, garbage.

All it does is loosen crap up plugging the oil filter therefore the bypass allows all that crap to flow through what used to be a ring & bearing fixable motor now needing crank grinds and such...

Know how hard carbon is, ever see what it does to bearings and such... looks like they had sand in them.

-Enjoy

what type of oil filter did you use.personally i prefer wix,i have had fram give me high pressure and low pressure reading before.try a different filter and see what reading you get.

btw. and old racecar engine builder tell me all you need is 10 psi for every 1000 rpm,for the engine to survive.
