Theft prevention ideas

I will be taking my truck down to the Baja 500 in June and am looking for theft prevention ideas. Something convenient that prevents the truck from being starting/hotwired or something mechanical like the club. It is 2009 FX4, not what built in stuff it has, just got a few weeks ago. Kinda thinking of hidden switch or something.

I've seen a keyed switch for the cable to the starter. Something off a Caterpillar tractor. Sorry, can't give you more than that, but something like that will prevent easy starting, but it can still get hauled/towed/stripped.

You going with a group or can you tag on? Tough sledding down there solo methinks....you could lose your head.

I've seen a device in the past kinda like the club, but it was for the brake pedal. The argument was that the steering wheel is desinged to "give" in an impact whereas the brake pedal is designed to withstand all. And our trucks cannot be shifted into gear without the brake pedal being depressed.
Too bad you can't get one of those "boots" they put on your car for unpaid parking tickets... That'd be great!
My '77 f-150 was stolen some years back, but they found it about a block away. It had run out of gas. That's why I'd parked it at my buddy's house overnight where it was stolen from. You could just siphon all the gas each time you park it then seeing as how these are flex fuel capable, just get your inebraitede buddies to, um, fill her up, with recycled tequila!
My '77

Any anti theft device can be beaten with a rollback tow truck. Give me five minutes and your truck is gone. The only sure anti theft system is to secure the truck in a locked and GUARDED area.

I am going with 3 to 4 other trucks, we are part of a race team and I am racing a motorcycle so I will have my bike on a Joe Hauler and our spare parts, gear, etc in the bed with a lockable shell. We are staying at a secure hotel but you hear the horror stories down there so I was hoping to have something to make a my truck harder to steal and perhaps the thieves would move on to something easier. With Ensenada full of people and parking tight most of the thefts you hear about are hot wire typed, not tow truck type.

Rent a truck and make sure you can take it to Mexico. Make sure your insurance covers your truck in Mex. It prob. doesn't.

Club, steering wheel cover, pull fuses, etc.

Put it in 4wd and engage parking brake might slow down alil from rollback but if they want it they will get it.

I parked a 95 dodge in a "gray" area one day at the state fairgrounds. I put it in 4wd and engaged parking brake. They had to pull drive shaft to tow. It sucked but the tow truck driver and I got a chuckle out of it. He already had driveshaft back in when I got to it. He was nice enough to let me out of paying ticket and they say that never happens at the state fairgrounds.

With a bottle of dish soap and my winch and regardless of the brakes or being in gear I can get it.

You bring cash so if they try to take it from you claiming your importing unapproved electronics - you can bribe them.
Also, An enclosed trailer is your friend or an actual friend / local person with influence will keep you & truck safe.

A revelco system could help you out with people not being able to start your truck. They are an engine immobilizer system that will not allow the engine to start. This system will not stop someone with a tow truck from taking your truck, but it will not allow your average crook to take your rig, sure they could gut it but they will not drive it away (provided you take the plug with you). I think that it might be something to look into. Here is a link to their webpage for some more information.

Hope that this has been of some help,

Ya, if they want it they will get it, blah blah....hell they could swoop in with a helicopter and carry it away. just leave the keys in it then!

Not all thieves are sophisticated james bond types with the latest equip. Unless we are watching "Gone in 60 sec".

My truck was stolen in Feb...can you tell I'm still bitter.

Nothing is 100% but every little bit helps. The club, a good alarm, starter/alt/fuel pump kill switch, coded keys etc etc can make a scumbag think twice or look for an easier target.

I have the bad fortune of living close to an Indian Reservation, let me say the cops are kept busy with stolen vehicle reports and the fire dept is busy putting them out a few days later. The most popular targets are chevy pickups...guess what my truck was. Around here every indian has a dreamcatcher hanging from the rear view mirror so the other indians know not to steal from one of there own.

I look out the window a few times a day to make sure she is still there.
