How do I tell if clutch is needs replaced?

OK, I know normally that when a clutch starts to slip etc..it's going out, but with my f350 v10 superduty it's not slipping...it jumps when starting off a lot, it didnt use to do that so I've been wondering about this. Alot of standard transmissions have that little hatch that you can look through and take a peek to see your clutch plate but the superduty does not.

Whats your take on this? Is a jumpy start indicative of bad clutch?

Thanks, Vinni

Could be a bad clutch. May also be bad u-joints. How many miles do you have on it?

A worn disk won't typically cause clutch shudder. More likely either contamination or a warped pressure plate or flywheel. Could also be a weak pressure plate.

Check this out.

Are you getting any signs that the rear main seal may be leaking. Could be oil contamination.

Sounds like the springs in the clutch plate broke or got very weak. Either that, or like angler said, it's contaminated with oil or otherwise smoked.

To rule out the u-joints even though they've already been checked, get it to at least 30-40 MPH, step on the clutch, rev the engine up, and let it out slowly. If you still get the "shudder" the clutch is definitely the problem.

ok, I checked and no apparent leaks anywhere.....no bad sounds coming from clutch when at idle engaged or disengaged. I just hate to throw my money away at the dealer if it really doesnt need a new one. Thanks for the help guys....
