Unhappy What else could it be?

Sorry to start a new thread from my situation, but this one is asking about possible engine problems... Please read...

Long story short, had oil leaking from the exhaust so removed the turbo, bought a used van turbo, rebuilt the van turbo with a brand new rebuild kit, put it on and it still leaked. Rebuilt the turbo 4 separate times using both the original oil housing and the van turbo oil housing with same result... oil leaking from the exhaust (actually right out of the exhaust side of the turbo).

So, now I'm considering buying a new turbo as both my oil housing and the one that came with the van turbo may have been bad. Only problem is, I don't want to drop that much money, put the new turbo on, and have the same problem.

So my questions ultimately are:
What could make oil run out of the exhaust side of the turbo? (There's no oil in the up-pipes, y-collector, or coming from the pedestal.) Could some other problem with the engine cause this? (bad injector o-rings, too much oil pressure to the turbo somehow, etc.). Need help bad on this one! This is week 3 with my truck out of commission.
Thanks for everything guys!

How do you have your CCV run? Too much crankcase pressure will cause oil drain problems from the turbo. I had some problems with my CCV trap and it caused my 38R to leak some oil at the outlet. I corrected the problem and it went away. It did take awhile for the leak to clear up though. So far, leak free.

EDIT: Sorry, just read your other thread. My problem was with the CCV. Sounds like yours is elsewhere.

Sounds like you're in the right place and like Mueckster has a place for you to start as that sounds about right but other then that I don't have a clue so here's a bump.

I'm gonna recheck my CCV again. The hose is only 3 ft long or less cause it emptys right below the engine. Can the doghouse or the valve cover get clogged up somehow?

The element in the doghouse can get restricted over time. I cleaned mine when I had it off to reverse it for the CCV mod. I didn't look all that bad at the time and had less than 100k miles on it.

Take the oil filler cap off, that should relieve any pressure that would build up in the crank case. Just to see if there is a problem with the CCV system.

This sounds like a bad turbo to me as well.

You could tape a rag over the oil filler tube and test drive it.

I'll throw out another idea. If you have the turbo off, check to see if the oil drain passages from the turbo all the way back into the oil pan are clear. I would try 50+ psi of air (with the oil filler cap removed!!!) to see if you are getting good flow. If these passages were blocked, the lube oil from the turbo would have nowhere to go excepet out the shaft and into the exhaust.

You guys are awesome! How do I get the element out of the CCV Roland? And Jock, would the air pressure clear any blocks in the return passage? Is that the only place that return passage goes is into the oil pan? Definitely gonna try both those fixed tomorrow!

Remove the CCV (doghouse). The housing is two piece. Remove the upper half and you will see the element inside. Clean with solvent/degreaser and reassemble.

Got the CCV apart today and cleaned up the element. Also blew air thru the oil drain from the pedestal. All good there. Gonna reinstall the CCV, pedestal, and turbo tomorrow and see what happens. Any other thoughts though as to anything else to check or look for are greatly appreciated!
