Quick SAS Axle Question.

I want to do a SAS swap on my 95 F150. I just found a high pinion D44 complete off a 79 Bronco for $300. What does high pinion mean and what else will I need off the Bronco to make it fit? Right now my truck has the quad shock and a ttb.

Thanks guys.

High pinion is the position of the opinion on the diff, its in the same spot (top to bottom) as ur TTB. Best thing to get off the bronco would be radius arms, trac bar, tie rod, and lower coil buckets.

Would I need the upper coil buckets as well since I have the quad shock ones?

Nope, your upper brackets will still work, and you can get the proper front "C"s for tHe radius arms, and brackets to run quad shOcks on the solid axle. There where a couple different setups on the 78-79 broncos, from quads, to one shock in front of the axle and one behind, to bothbehind the axle. So the parts are easy to find

Thanks for the info. Now with the TTB crossmember... Do I need to replace it with something, leave it or throw it away?

Depending on how much lift you are going to have. I'd just trim it down to clear your setup. Its welded and have rivets holding it to the frame, so taking it out is a huge pain, but you can trim a lot off it.

Well I already have 4" and I have heard when you do this swap it will add another 2". Will I need to change out my coils or will they move over.

Coils for a 76-79 F150 78/79 bronco work best. And 6 inch is most common. But people have gone less

I'd be willing to bet that anyone that spent money on any SAS using a dana 44 did so because they thought it was cost effective.

I'd be willing to compare costs with a 1 ton swap.

I often wonder why anyone lifting this era vehicle would consider keeping the 8.8 in the rear, and still wonder why they choose to take small steps.

Jumping right into 1 ton gear does not have to be expensive. IN most cases it is what any owner eventually wants to do,,,,,,,,,,so why wait?

Compare some costs, and look at how much an entire donor truck costs when compared to any 1/2 ton TTB lift kit.

As I mentioned, I bet the results would be amazing, and might leave many wondering why in the heak they even decided to buy anything 1/2 ton in the first place. This would include wheels, small lift kits or anything of the sort.

A moderate lift and a killer drivetrain can be achieved for a very reasonable amount of money.

Compare and see.

And add 100 dollar bill to every axle shaft you break. I could have almost paid for the dana 60 front I bought with just the money on the shafts and u-joints I wrecked last summer

Well this is my daily and I'm on the unemployed budget so D60's are a bit much for me. And I didn't do the TTB lift or the body lift, that was all the PO. I dont know why anybody would lift one of these trucks without at least a solid D44.

I am not going with the D44 for the price difference but just a upgrade from a crap TTB. I don't get too rowdy with this thing anyway, I gotta drive it home. It just spends it time getting me and my buddies into the woods.

I finally talked to the guy with this axle and he said its just been sitting about a year outdoors and he is unsure of its history. What should I be looking out for and how much is it to, worst case, rebuild it? Is $300 reasonable or too much?

Thanks for the input.

Its a weekend warrior atleast not a mall crawler, shudder. I just think it will be a fun mod since this is my first real 4x4 and I think it will at least pay for itself in tire wear. haha
