There used to be a rubber boot over that slip joint, held on by those zip ties. Don't forget that ratchet!

ok. makes sense now.
i had to look around for it before i found the ratchet. seeing the driveshaft like that sure did make me forget what i was doing.
is this a big deal to have missing?
Anyone know where i could get a replacement?
What would cause it to fall off?

If it's made the way i think it is, as a tube, then it must have gotten torn then thrown off, no other way. To replace it i imagine you'll have to disconnect one end of the shaft and slide it on. It's there to keep crap out of the splines of the joint; personally i'd just duct tape a plastic bag around it and see how long it lasts, but since yours has a carrier bearing to contend with that might not be an option.

Keeping dirt and water out of those slip splines is kinda' important.
Boot is a dealer item. Cheap insurance and money well-spent.

There's no way a plastic bag is gonna last.
Do it right and use an empty beer can and some duct tape.

While you have the shaft down, do this.

So i just regular bearing grease?
And one thing i noticed is that he installed a zerk to regrease thi as needed. can someone explain how to do this?
I would like to just knock it out while i have it all disassembled.
Picked up the parts yesterday at ford. $27.00

Use the special Ford aqua-colored teflon grease.
Adding the zerk seriously increases your chances of over-greasing the splines, causing the splines not to slip together properly, and causing the driveshaft to bind.
I thought about doing this, but after thinking it through, decided against it. Just take the time to do it once-in-a-while.

I used high heat grease on mine. I don't know if it matters much on what grease you use.

Where do you get the high heat grease from and what brand is it?
