enjoy the hades out of it .............. denver is right thats just the way they look . my 53 is my first flatty and i'm still on a learning curve . i took the heads off mine and intake , to change valvesprings and even with running coolant my passages looked like that ! i'd be willing to bet clean all the gook out of it and put it together she'll run , no rebuild needed. this is one tough ol' sob of a motor .

There is no oil running in the heads of a flathead, all those pictures show the cooling passages. Even hot-tanking usually doesn't get it all out, lots of poking and chiping with heavy wire and high-pressure spray will help. The blocks don't have a drain plug so dirt and rust accumulate at the back of the block. Very important to get as much out as possible. But check for cracks before you spend too much time on it.

the ones i'm referring too i easy to see and i had an early block that had some and it's in a car running . as far as hairline cracks , or a cracked water jacket . have the machine shop pressure test and magnaflux it . cheap insurance . don't let some peep who doesn't know anything 'bout them try to put in studs or anything . the guy here that bought my early blocks let capitol machine aka tim wilersons shop do it and the guy who did it put a long stud in a short bolt hole and walla instant conversation peice . i and the owner both knew peeps in the shop and they said the machinist did it as he didnt know , didnt ask , didnt read or anything . the shop managers didnt say anything , he took it home put it together and fired it and had antifreeze coming out of an exhaust port . they said " it was like that " . right !!!!!!!!!! gotta get back in my truck and go pretend to do something now later !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got two flatty's I could restore if I had the time and money. Maybe some day I will, but I've never done anything with them, so I'll be following this thread with interest. I've debated putting one of the flatty's in my truck but if I'm cruising down through Nebraska and lose a water pump or something like that I'd like to be able to hit the nearest part store and be back on the road.
