I have a continuing problem with water in the passenger side floorboard under the floor mat. I have changed the heater core, and I have caulked the drip rails with siicone sealant. These haven't seemed to change the situation at all. It's not a lot of water, but it just stays damp to the touch. Any ideas would be appreciated. It's an '85 model.
hows the weather stripping on the door look? are you sure its just water and can you wipe it then see where it comes from and follow it to where it originates?
The weather stripping on the door looks good. I believe it is only water.....on a cold morning you can see ice crystals. I did dry the floorboard after installing the new heater core, but the moisture returned. I haven't tried hosing down the exterior to try to detect leaks....that may be next! Thanks!
i see this problem with a van at work but since its a work vehicle don have the time to bother with it, fleet is their problem. i want to say it may just be water that accumulates in your heat ducting from your heatr being on, kinda like a sweating toilet the mositure collects inside and drips down maybe. so maybe it doesnt happen when its running or you dont see it but after, it all drips down as it condenses and pools up on the floor, usually freezing into a big chip of ice i the winter. but again this is just an idea.
The problem is over the years gunk collects in the whole air/heater system from the open cowl vents. If you have A/C you have to clean it under the hood too where the cover is over the condensor. Sometimes you can suck enough out through the resistor opening. Othertimes you have to remove the whole cover (not an easy job - easier if you have a body lift) and clean the stuff out that way.
Ideally, you put some screened vents on the cowl, then remove the whole A/C heater system, clean it, and be done with it forever. Sometimes you can vacuum it out by removing the plenum/duct work inside, sometimes not.
The biggest problem is the water will eventually rot the floor.
I had the same problem on my 88b2 (purchased in July 2002). I did the same/same with the suggestions on the drip rail, heater core, fresh air induction, etc., and nothing helped. My passenger floorboard remained damp, slightly wet, and that nasty sticky feeling. Being **** on rebuilding my old buggy, I went "below ground".
While removing the seats to do a complete carpet cleaning I checked the floor drain plugs. They looked fine but I sprayed the hose from under the body to the plugs and they began to weep droplets of water. Not a lot, but enough to see that over time the problem did occur. I removed the plugs, applied silicone around the lip areas and reinstalled. So far so good with me. You might try that. PS. Only two leaked but as long as it was tore down I did all of them. Good Luck !
