oil pressure

my oil pressure gauge started "twitching" around. while driving it will go from very low to high . in idle, it will usually stay still. iam going to repace the sending unit and see if this helps. any body have this happen? am i looking to replace an oil pump?

That would be my bet also. I'm not positive though because I have a mechanical gauge. Off course, electric can be a lot better, my copper line broke once going down the freeway and I could not believe the amount of oil that came out of that little copper line. Stopped me dead on the side of the freeway, no oil to injectors. First time I've ever seen the stock gauge drop to nothing. I used a sheet metal screw to stop the leak until I got to where I was going. The worst part was laying in a hugh puddle of oil to fix it while cars when by at 80mph!!

try cleaning off the connection and then wiggling the wire on the sending unit while watching the gauge first. It's usually not the sender. The wire losing contact on the stud is most common followed by a bad gauge.

YOu can also take off the bezel around the gauges and tap the oil pressure gauge when it is bouncing. If it makes a difference then it's the gauge.
I just replaced my oil pres/water temp gauge for the same problem and now the oil pressure works perfect but the temp gauge bounces around. The factory gauges suck!

I'd say sensor or wiring. If you really had an oil pressure issue that caused the idiot gauge to move that much you would be able to tell with the way the truck ran. As mentioned, injectors fire off of engine oil. If the oil pump was bad, you'd either have a rough running truck or you'd be walking because the injectors quit.

Thanks bearhugger, I should probably get rid of that copper line. I had a plastic line once in my 81 Jetty and it broke above my fuel pedal and socked my foot before I felt 'HOT'!!
Right after my PSD leak I posted "Did I ruin my motor" and had replys that said no, the computer will shut it down before that happens, thanks goodness!!
