Front end? drive shaft? lockouts? rear drive shaft? transmission or transfer case?
What type of noises?
Banging and or popping? Screeching squealing? Grinding?
Assuming manual transfer case right, you have the lever on the floor? Not the push button?
Over all condition of lockouts, good shape clean with fresh grease? (Didn't over do the lube either though?)
Does it tend to vibrate at a given speed? at all speeds? Noises mostly when in a turn? all the time?
Put transfer case in N while truck was in N...While truck was in N, put it back in 4h or tried but made grinding noises... Put the truck in Park made wierder noises...
Normal, at least to an extent. If you didn't do it right, sounds like you didn't, the trans was still spinning IE; "in gear" when you tried to go from neutral in the TC to 4L, can't do that. Complete stop, trans shifter in neutral.
I'll also hazard a guess you're not getting the TC fully into the chosen range, partially engaged will cause all kinds of bad noises, skipping/banging sounds.
Get under it and lube up the shift linkage real good, the shifters tend to freeze up from lack of use especially low range. As the lever must be pushed down to clear the gate, it is also tough to lube correctly as the two rubber boots prevent doing so....unless one or both is torn.
Clip the zip ties at the small end of the boots top and bottom, flush with plenty of penetrate, install new zip ties to restore seal.
The lever itself pivots on a large bolt, often the lever seizes on that bolt leaving the lever to pivot at the bolt where threaded into the case, you want to correct that if that is happening.
Get all four wheels off the ground, engage the different ranges, rotate stuff, check all u-joints, see what its doing what you can find obvious.
Come back and give us more to go on. (And let us know if its push button 4W).
Oh and one other thing, do not for any reason make sharp turns with 4W engaged on pavement or other hard surfaces, that includes gravel.
