Trailer Brake Controller Problems

I have a 2005 F-250 Powerstroke. I bought it a few weeks back and towed my 26ft bumper pull rv today for the first time. I took the Draw-Tite Activator brake controller from my old truck and wired it in as instructed. I could not get this ting to work no matter what I tried until I unhooked the trailer. The light lights up and gets brighter with more brake pressure as it should with the trailer hooked up. Hook the trailer up and it just goes dead. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO FIX THIS! Thanks for any advice.

Most likely wiring error...look here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...g-diagram.html

Do wire in the ground...do NOT rely on the ground to be provided by the hitch ball.

Just to clarify, do you mean when you hook up the trailer the light goes out and the controller has no light at all? Did you take any voltage readings at the seven pin on the rear of your truck?

Obviously, the new (to you) truck does NOT have the intergrated brake controller built-in. Is this correct?

No the truck does not have the integrated brakes. I really wanted to add them but i am under the asumption that you have to have a different booster pump. I will try and wire the ground direct.

I am noticing that when the trailer is not pluged into the truck that the lights on the controller are somtimes on and somtimes off. They are never on when I plug the trailer in. I am guessing a ground problem or a short somewhere.

Thanks for the wiring diagram but the truck came with the 7 pin outlet on the back. Just no trailer brakes. I have checked every diagram possible and cannot find any fault with my wiring of the harness.

See if you have voltage at the blue lead on the seven pin with the trailer unplugged.
