I have to thank those of you who wrote replies to my last thread. I have just bought a 78 f100 with a straight 6 3 in the tree. when i depress the clutch somtimes there is a sound that is like a yurkey gobble. it goes away if i put it in neutral and let out the clutch. i feel a vibration in the clutch that corresponds to the gobble.
I wonder if this has been seen before.

Sounds like the clutch release bearing is going bad. If you aren't familiar with this truck's maintenance then it may need a clutch as well. Just the first thing that comes to mind that can cause this noise.

The clutch itself is strong although there is a shudder that almost goes away when the clutch warms up a little. How urgent is this problem as the budget is tight until school ends. I will likely do the work myself unless it is crazy tools that I need and can not rent. does this sound reasonable??

Luckily, it is probably just your throw-out bearing drying up and squealing a bit...not an expensive piece to replace at all! As far as tools, you'll just need the basic wrench set w/a jack/stand/s. All you should have to do is disconnect the driveshaft, pull the tranny out, and then while the bellhousing is still mounted on the motor you can stick your hand in there and pull out your old throwout bearing. Make sure you notate which direction it was facing so that you don't install the new one backwards. I hope this helps, the project in itself it easy but could easily take up to a day for a begginer.

I had the same set up in my 79 when I bought it 14 years ago.I drove it for maybe 6 months and swapped in an automatic and steering column out of a 302. I did this primarily because I had a parts truck and it was cheaper than keeping the 3 speed and replacing the clutch. You can continue driving keeping you eyes open for replacement parts often at a good price. Back then I wasn't budget minded, I was desperate, either fix it cheap or walk.
I will never sell that old truck because although I had a few anxious moments it never ever let me down.(except occasionally running out of gas, but that wasn't entirely the trucks fault)
Don't hestitate in posting requests for CHEAP repairs, get through school and we'll come up with something to keep you mobile till then.
