Added another one !!

Well, after we struck out at the auction we came home and went through the producer and found an 82 L9000 with a 855 cummins (350hp) and a 13 spd with a 4x8x17 box on it. We phoned the guy yesterday and went up and had a look. The truck was in good shape, it had new tires all around, new batteries and tarp. The box being a little smaller than we wanted we decided to think on it. Anyways we did some math and figured if we make the box 8" higher it would hold 500 bu of grain, so I phoned him and made him an offer but he turned it down so I thought the deal was done. Well he just phoned about a 1/2 hour ago and acepted our offer.

That must be one of the last 350's I thought 400's and 444's were more in the 80's. Let me know how you like it I'm looking at a semi with a 335 in June

Glad ya got a truck ya like man! You will have to let us know how those 855 cummins engines are. Ive heard they were crappy, and ive heard they were good, and very very cheap to repair.

Ive got a last model 444 cummins in my dump truck, and it seems to be a decent powerplant so far. Ive heard horror stories about the big cam series, but in my experience, so far, its been really god. Excellent mileage and plenty of power.

I am looking forward to driving it home although it has been a long time since I drove a 13, I hope I remember what I am doing. I have never heard anything bad about the 855 as for hp I think they start at about 210hp and go up to 400. There is a million of those motors around in trucks, tractors, marine and industrilal stuff and they are still going stong and they are still making them. It is my understanding that the N14 is a 855 block with electrical controls, but I am not a 100% on that. The 400's were the problem motors from what the mechanic we deal with at the plant has told me, just a little to much hp for that motor. That being said we have had two of them in trucks at the plant and they have both performed well for us. I have a friend with a 444 and he has been driving since the late 80 hauling gravel and it is still going strong. I has been rebuilt but that is about it. Anyways I am bring home the truck saturday so you will get all the details then and maybe a picture if I remember my camera.

Congrats on the truck. As far as I know the 855 block was finally retired when they came out with the ISX series that just came out

I got it home yesterday, and when I get a minute I will post a few pictures. It ran great and seems to have lots of power, I never did have to down shift even going through the valley.

We had three N14's in trucks and some in Versatile tractors and the last two have been in CaseIh (Steigers). The ones in the tractors were all flawless - the current one in our 9390 is 425, truned up to 465! Brutus is the name aptly given to that tractor.
The problems arose witht he Big Cam 3's (oops, forgot we had a couple 290 hp versions long long ago before the three mentioned above). They fixed two of our trucks repeatedly on warranty - the real solution came when they cut the counterbores and went to lower press fit liners. The power levels combined with the heavy loads of pulling trains made the liners move in the block with time resulting in oval cylinders, excessive blow by, and oil consumption that didnt require oil changes (couple gallons/day just before rebuilds!!!).
Once the switch was made to the lower press fit liners, the engines were good, and cheap to fix!!!

Warm-ups are critical on these engines!

As the old saying is for miles around you can smell a Cummins cold start...
Very nice lookin truck, whats with the blue patches though?
If it were mine I'd be really tempted to extend the box higher about 12-16 inches though.

Not a bad looking truck at all.

Is it a tandem, or tag axle?
