Tipping
As far as tipping goes.
Pizza Guy gets one when I have extra $$$.
Restaurant Server's get what I feel they deserve.(I've been on both sides of this debate & had been involved in the restaurant business for 20 years)
Furniture guys ?
Na,If they did a great job, I tell them I will recommend them to as many people as possible.
How about I get a tip for: Opening doors for people,Carrying groceries for the elderly,Letting people go ahead of me at line-ups,etc,etc?
Rules for servers to receiving a tip.
Smile
Be polite, well mannered & attentive to their needs.
Be good at what you do.
Don't ask "who gets what" when there you are only serving TWO people
Don't rush people at all.
Don't order their meal(entree')too soon so they rush eating their salad.
Make sure you keep the water glass full
Deliver HOT meals to people FIRST > Then COLD drinks to people next
Don't ever EXPECT a tip > Be grateful when you recieve one(unless it's a penny). Then learn from that experience.

Hmmm. I thought that was called "greasing palms." But a good tip at least insures they don't spit in your food next time you come in.
Oh, by the way, I do try to tip well. Pizza guy gets $2 on an $18 pizza order. Restaurants usually get close to 20% unless service is poor. Once did my math wrong and gave 40%--on a $50 dinner none the less!
I never tip the barber because I am my barber, well sort of. Wife often has to fix it up after I get done. (No I won't post a picture
)The incident(s) that brought this whole tipping thing up was a day in which we moved three seperate customers old furniture out, around, or away. We do not advertise this service, as we do not usually have time to haul old furniture. However, in all three instances this day, if we hadn't moved the furniture, we couldn't complete our new furniture delivery. It was raining, and two of the three 'takeaways' were covered in crud. I guess I was just extremely irritated when I posted.
By the way, that cow tipping thing. Those cows are lightweight compared to most of the new stuff we carry!

However, I'd say if you were as careful as you say that it certainly IS a tipping situation, and I have tipped guys delivering thousands of dollars worth of furniture, WHEN they were careful and acted like they cared.
However, you will leave empty handed if your service is crappy. Case in point I ordered carpet from Lowe's and it was scheduled to be installed on a given day two weeks ago. We called as directed to get our delivery 'window' and were told 10-2. I had taken the day off from work, had my brother help me move the furniture, I was ready for them by 10:00. They were no call/no show by 2:15 and we had to call for status, told they were running about an hour late. One more call at 3:30, they were still an hour away but still coming. The office closed at 4:30 and by 6:15 p.m. we still had no idea if they were still coming or not!! They called at 7:00 p.m. and arrived at 7:30, done by 8:30, the house was trashed and we couldn't move the entire day waiting for their arrival.
They did not get a tip, although they did a GREAT job installing the carpet. It is not my problem that they overbooked the earlier part of the day, I wasted a day off and sat around for 9 hrs waiting for them, it stinks but they had to suffer because their superiors/dispatchers overbooked them, my only recourse was to stiff them to show my displeasure.
Bottom line, good service you should get a tip, furniture movers, carpet installers, et al. However, I too have been on both sides as server and customer and sometimes you just will not get a tip out of a cheapo SOB who considers it 'just your job'. Especially in the service industry, your wages are much lower than minimum wage with the tip factor figured in, everyone should be aware of that; I don't believe everyone knows how furniture delivery guys get paid or how much but as a service provider I would and do tip them when the situation calls for it.

Also, sometimes writing a nice (or nasty) letter does alot too.
Sometimes the owners will tip employees that get nice letters from customers. So, I allways try to write a little note or letter if I am really satisfied or angry with someones service.

>but not nearly as funny. I think the movie theater guys
>should get tips when the line for popcorn is out the door on
>the weekends. It sucks, and then people get p'd off at you
>because they had to wait. Please, get here earlier for your
>movie @#$*&&$^^#*&((), and don't order an ice cream sunday
>and make everyone behind you wait forever, unless it is
>dead. I hate people that think we're a restaurant.

This reminds me. Why can't you just bring your own snacks to the movie? Do the movie snack police arrest you if they catch you? I would no sooner eat anything that comes from behind that counter than I would off a germ wagon lunch truck, or street corner hot dog vendor
I thought Tipping was a city in China!

oh man at first i thought this thread was about cow tipping!! or is that just an iowa thing?? lol:P
