He was told that he would have to gut the electrical in his 92 to be able to swap in the 96 351.
He was also told that the only direct swap he could do is if he found a 92 302 only engine (not 91 or 93 Etc...)
No this is all totally wrong, both motors will plug right in and any 5.0 would work including one from a Mustang or Explorer. The wiring in the '92 does not have to change at all, the 5.8 is essentially identical to the 5.0 in terms of sensor locations and such so that motor will literally plug right in as far as wiring is concerned. The big issue is the transmission in the truck, is it a manual or automatic and if auto is it the all mechanical AOD or the EEC controlled 4R70w or E4OD? If he has a manual or AOD then he needs a 5.8 EEC from a manual or C6 auto truck.. a common combo in the late '80 to early '90's, but if it's one of the others he must get an EEC for that exact engine/trans combo. If the truck has a 4R70w then that's really bad because there were no 5.8/4R70w combos from the factory. Otherwise the swap will require a 28oz flywheel or flexplate for the transmission in question.. can't use the 50oz version currently on the 5.0, and some exhaust modifications will be necessary because the 5.8 is wider. So bottom line is if the truck has a 4R70w then a 5.8 isn't easily done, if that's the case then look for another 5.0 instead.. preferrably one form a '94+ truck, Explorer, or a Mustang. To use the Stang or Explorer 5.0 the truck intake, oilpan and pickup, and accessories will have to be swapped on.
