Somebody in my area is giving away a 1993 Achieva. I guess it's an Oldsmobile. They say it runs but doesn't stay running. That is all the info they gave about it.
Any ideas what would be the problem why it doesn't stay running?
If it's an easy/cheap fix, I may just pick it up.
if it has the 3.1 or 3.4 they have issues with the box thing on the firewall, I think its called the ignition module that the coils attach to. But things like the coils, ignition switches, starters are common problems on them. Others issues include many many with the transmission, knocking in the engine, which could be the rods or pistons. The 4 cylinder ones seem to be a little less problematic. But still many ignition and wiring issues. A guy I know that loves gm's said the ignition module is the most common reason they won't stay running and usually run about $150.
it's a freebie so maybe try once again . even if it's junk it could donate some parts too a project , no ???? that's all gm's are really good for anyway . donating parts too real vehicles like our fords . norm's mopar here borrowed a couple of parts from a gm too . the carbs are from some old caddies !! gm's are great parts sources ..................
I'd try seeing if you could get the current owner to pay you something to get it out of his driveway.
Then you would have a little extra cash to put toward the inevitable timing belt replacement if it has the fabled quad4 in it. Don't wait to do it either, interference motor gives no indication that it's going, just breaks and scatters a few pieces of the valve train around.
Too bad the quad's got a chain. Water pumps and tensioners are most normally the problem. I used to be the only one at the dealership that didn't mind doing those.

had one back in 92 in a skylark...belt/chain couldnt remember. I do remember it wasnt worth it to fix the pos. In its' defense the Q4 was pretty powerful for a little 4 banger.
