I am used to the normal 5.4 tic it is a little different than that. When I accelerate it sounds kind of airy too. I know it’s not a very good description but was wondering if it was a common problem or noise.

Does it do it all the time, cold, hot in gear etc.

The tic is usually during start up. The rpms seems a bit higher then normal during that time also. What should they be around. The winding noise/airy noise happens when the rpms are going up so during start up and acceleration Its a 2004 f150 5.4 fx4 package with about 80000 miles on it

Tick at start up

Did you recently try a different brand of oil filter? An oil filter with an inferior anti-drain back valve can cause a tick at start up.If the oil seeps past the anti-drainback valve while the truck sits you'll get a brief dry start.
Please tell me you're not using Fram oil filters.

It's possibly an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold. Take a piece of hose and listen through it to pinpoint where it's coming from. As the above post it can be the oil filter too.

I like Purolator, and Valvoline, but come to think of it the sound might have started around that time. It does seem to be coming more towards the right side bank (passenger side)

Does the wind noise on startup only happen after the engine has sat long enough to fully cool down? It so it is probably the fan running, mine does the same thing but it only last until the rpm's starts to drop. The ticking could be alot of things: exhaust leak, a shield vibrating, or it could be the fuel pump or injecters, they are noisy on these engines.

I just reread your post and saw that you're used to the 5.4 tick, so it's probably not the injector/fuel pump noise.

If it's one exhaust port leaking, it will sound like a tick. Most exhaust leaks are further back and several cylinders together sound different.

well Its been raining here the past 2 day so i havent had time to take a look at it ill be sure to keep you guys updated and see what i find Could it be a water pump?

I doubt it would be the water pump, a bad bearing in that would cause more of a whining sound.

It was the tensioner pulley that went bad. It just made a whining noise at first, couldn't detect it till the bearings started squeaking. half hour and 18 bucks later fix!

I have just picked up the same noise, had it a few years ago , you can loose it by spraying WD40 into the bearing, but comes back pretty quick.
I am guessing its a 80K mileage issue as I am on 160K now and it will be the second time.
