hey everyone, my dads 97 f150 is being goofy. when he's driving it, the 4x4 will turn it self on everynow and then. its obviously a 4x4 on the fly its not a manual shifter... what does he have to do to fix it?
The 4x4 is controlled by a switch input signal to a module called GEM.
It's located under the dash as part of a fuse block.
I suspect the age of the truck has a leaking windshield that has dropped water onto the GEM causing internal shorts and corrosion.
If this happens, you can see all manner of ghost problems.
If the GEM has to be replaced, it is programable with the options the truck was built with.
The new module has to be programmed as the old was.
This is a dealer job.
Hopefully there is some simpler issue causing the problem, good luck.
