Limited Slip Question????

I recently bought a 2005 Super Duty V10 4x2 with 4.10 gears. I changed all the fluids and noted that the rear end is conventional....

As it is 2 wheel drive, I would really like to have some sort of limited slip unit.

I am a pretty good mechanic but never worked on automatic transmissions or rear ends.

Do the LS units have to be professionally installed, or do they just bolt to the ring gear in the rear end? Do the gears have to be re-aligned as if I was chnaging gear sets? THanks

The mesh has to be set, can be a real PITA. I would take it to a reputable shop since they do alot of these installs and can be held liable if the mesh is wrong. Might as well put in a locker if going that far.

when install any new carrier it would be neccary to adjust back lash and pinion depth. to do so correctly requires some not so common tools and just a little reading.
there not hard to do but if you dont do it right you can wind up with big issues.

Yea, if you do it yourself you might get 5k miles out of it if its not right and you will be replacing it again.

I would check the price diffrence in a local shop with good parts vs letting ford do it. That way if you do end up with uneven gear wear problems you can go back on the dealership and they will do it right vs the posable quick fix from a local shop.
