Future Plans for my Forest Ford
I have found a hood, check. I also found a 289 4bbl from a 1967 Mustang, totally rebuilt. $500. Now all I need is a transmission rebuild, new seats, and brakes.
I priced out new brakes on Napa.com. This included a master cylender rebuild kit, 4 new drums, 8 new shoes, 4 new wheel cylnds, 4 new rubber brake lines. Thats all I need right? My total was like $300.

Excellent!
Hey, I put a 3 speed overdrive behind my 289 on my 55 and it was OUTSTANDING!!!!!
You could put a C4 on it if you like automatics, but would probably have to do something with the rear end gearing!!!!
PS Be sure to clean the brake lines, and bleed, bleed, bleed! Buy 2 litres of fluid!
PSS And there's no reason you can't drive it around the block with the dining room chair or milk crate in the cab like the rest of us did!

It might, you may have to change out the bell housing (unless you have the one for the289) - not sure! But I'd say better than 60/40 it will.
My 3spd overdrive was out of God knows what. It was 6 volt so anything 49-55 Ford. The transmission bolt pattern was the same for many transmissions for many years (that rectangular pattern with the bolt down at 4 o'clock extended out just a tad more), so finding a bell to bolt to the engine wasn't too much of a problem - it was a 64.5 mustang 289. It also hooked right up to the stock column shift! That was a nice drive train. I put a 56 gas tank behind the seat in addition to the one under the running board and I could drive from San Diego to San Francisco and back without stopping for gas!
