Brake Wheel Cylinders

I have a 1966 F250 2WD that I need to do brake work on. I did some research and found good quality front wheel cylinders at the local parts store but they are $60 ea. I was wondering if anyone had any experiance rebuilding them or if it would be even worth it. They seem pretty easy to do but I just don't want to add any unnessesary risk while driving.... Thanks

60 bucks seems a lot steep! Keep looking! Consider a disk conversion as a better investment. IMHO.

Thumbs down Brake Wheel Cylinders

Yeah, that seems like a lot. Sounds like a "list" or retail price.
I have too many friends in the business that I NEVER pay retail for anything!
I wouldn't waste time/money rebuilding them. Rarely does it seem to work. The cylinders need to be honed and perfectly smooth inside or the new seals will fail. If they've been on your truck even half it's life they are probably pitted and worn.
Definately shop around. If you have any friends in the repair business they may be able to buy them wholesale and sell them to you for much less (10% over their cost for the trouble is common).
You didn't say if you were working on the fronts or rears. If it's the fronts, I agree, dump the drums and swap in a disc setup. Will bolt right into your truck with minimal fuss.

Brake Wheel Cylinders

Rear list retail for $18.00 WC17509 Left WC17510 right
Fronts list retail for $31.18 WC37083 Left WC37084 right side
These are RayBestos

The rebuild kits are less then $5 each, but you need time and a good (not the cheap three finger type) brake cyl hone, but then you should likely do the bleaders and cleaning etc.

PS: 66 shows same part number for 4x4 and 2x4, and with all motors.

Thanks for all the help, I have to replace all four actually and the front ones were the ones that were $60, rear $20. I never even considered switching to discs in front so now I have another project for my life long truck.
