I'm new here and glad I found FTE! Have a question or questions about my 84 FSB with 4.9 i6. Problem is my feedback carb is acting up, I believe I narrowed it down to mixture control solenoid, Bronco will not want to idle sometimes, I notice that when this occurs MCS is not "clicking" like usual, so I tap MCS with hard object, (pocketknife), and it will start "clicking" and idling again, so my question is, MCS must need replaced? And if so does anyone have one? Thanks for FTE and any help.
I'll take a stab for you. I just looked on RockAuto.com and they have an "Idle speed control actuator" which might be what you are looking for. It is made by Airtex and is part #2H1457.
We have an extremely knowledgable member by the name of NumberDummy who is a guru of Ford parts and their numbers as well as if any are still available and where they are located. Perhaps he will monitor the forum today!
By the way, we also have a forum specific to inline sixes. You might post there as well.
In the inside bottom of the Mixture Control solenoid there is a plug in connection where the coil is connected to the wiring as thus receives it power. You removing the can by prying the two attach ears; one is shown by the blue arrow in the photo, to separate the magnetic coil. Check and clean the connections on the inside bottom of the can. You can bench test it with a battery charger or maybe even a 9 volt battery to see if it CLICKS each time.
There should be a lot of these used Mixture Control solenoid floating around out there as many have gotten ride of the computer controlled carbs. Try posting on the Ford Six forum if you can’t get yours cleaned up to work OK.
A Feedback Solenoid, (fuel mixture control solenoid) from one carb, may not be interchangeable with one from another as there were several types used. They may look the same, and bolt up the same, but they work different internally. IE: The one on my 1981 will not work on your 1984, but they look identical. The best bet to get the right one, and to save yourself heartache is to get a new one.
Numberdummy will need the ID tag number on the carb to see if he can get you the right one. It may be obsolete.
