steering box bracket

I'm in a major dilemma. The steering box bracket on my truck has split in half. I see that it is pop-riveted onto the frame, is there a way to replace this or am I going to have to buy a new truck? Seeing as I don't have the funds for a new vehicle, I hoping that there is a way to fix this. Any and all help is appreciated.

Thank you in advance. Tyler

What bracket are you talking about? The steering box is held directly on the frame by 3 bolts that go all the way thru from the L wheelwell, with no bracket. AFAIK, there are no pop-rivets anywhere on the frame; certainly not holding something that sees as much load as a steering box. The biggest pop-rivets on the truck hold the door/tailgate glass on the tracks. You are talking about the '87 F-150 in your sig, right?

There is a bracket, i'm looking right at it. The bracket is attached to the frame. So it is installed like this: 3 bolts go through the frame, through the bracket and into the steering box. The bracket is held on by pop-rivets. There is no mistake here. I know what I am seeing. The bracket is snapped in half towards the front of the truck frame rail. I'm having one cut off of another frame and then re-installed this weekend. Go out to your '80's model F150, look at the steering box. it will be attache to a black bracket that is pop-riveted onto the frame.

I've looked at plenty of '80-96 F-series & Broncos and I've never seen anything like what you're describing. Even the little BIIs & Rangers have the box bolted directly to the frame. So do the cars. I'd love to see a picture of that bracket or the one you're getting to replace it, if you can manage it. ...especially as it's installed in the truck.

As you can see here, I've done quite a bit of repairs to my truck, and I've replaced my steering box, too. Mine has NOTHING between the box & the frame.

You can see the front bolt in pic #6 of this album, and the hump of the frame sticking out where the box is attached. This truck has no bracket, either.

I'm not saying your truck has no bracket, but it sounds like something that's been added by a previous owner. I'd really like to see it.

Steve, I want to express my sincere apologies. I was misconstrued when I was looking at my truck. I'm not a great mechanic, but try as I will to do things myself. I went to a salvage yard today, saw exactly what I'm supposed to be looking at. Ok, yes, you are very, absolutely, positively correct! That's all I want to say, just to clear things up. The frame is cracked on the inner part of the frame towards the front of the steering box on the lower part of the frame.

No problem. I'm just glad you haven't been driving around with your steering box pop-riveted on! A good alignment shop that handles collision reconstruction is probably the best place to fix your frame.
