i just pulled a 351w out of a 79 van and was wanting to put it in my buddy's 80 bronco in place of his 300 since its wornout. does anyone know if the bellhousing is the same and if i can use the same flywheel and clutch off the 300. also does anyone know where i can get a driver side mount for the motor mount(351w) the one that is normally rivited to the frame(junk yards frown upon takin a torch in the yard)
thanks
The 300 flywheel will bolt on to the 351 but it is "zero balanced", meaning it has no counterweight. This would cause a severe vibration and damage if run with that engine.
I think the clutch disc and pressure plate might be the same though. The bellhousing is the same for both engines.
Both vehicles will most likely use 11" clutch assemblies.
I would take a cordless drill, chisels and hammer to the junkyard to un-rivet the motor mount perch.
no doubt the 300 is a good engine, but if your after power and a relitivly easy swap, a 351w is the way to go. the clutch and pressure plate will work but you need a different flywheel. also the motor towers are different. on mine it had four bolts hoilding the passenger side on to the frame and cross member (two on the top and two on the side) and the drivers side had two on the top and i believe it was 4 rivits down the side. you'll also need a different radiator or you'll have to run some crazy lookin hoses to make the 300's rad work ( the top inlet and bottom outlet are on different sides) the 300's throttle cable is much longer than needed on a 300 too but could be used i suppose. you can buy a new motor tower from broncograveyard.com but i think they are like $135 a side. if you really want to wake that 351w up id suggest a 4bbl intake, an edelbrock carb, long tubes and an msd box. just remember, its only money.
