so i have been without my 2002 f-250 with the 5.4 triton for about 3 weeks. within the last 6 months, anytime it rained i would get a skip or a misfire from the engine. so i figured it was either a bad plug or a coil. i have never messed with coild before so i brought it down to a friends garage for a tuneup. he replaced all the plugs, fuel filter, air filter, and 2 coil boots. to my surprise i had no bad coils. he ran the truck right after he finished working on it and on any kind of incline it still had a skip. he brought it back to the shop and shut it down to let it cool before taking another look. when he went to go take it for another ride it wouldnt start, and when he finally did get it started its would run and skip worse than before then shut itself down. the truck isnt throwing any kind of code and it will now run but skips once it is warmed up. another mechanic came in and changed a speed sensor but to no avail. anyone have any ideas?
The first thing you need to do is identify the misfiring cylinder by running a power balance test. Then I would perform an injector flow test to verify injector operation, then run a proper ignition system test.
Misfires are generally caused by faulty plugs, coils, injectors, or occasionally related wiring or sticking valves. Unless you have the proper equipment to check these things, you'll probably be better off just paying someone to diag these things for you then perform the repairs yourself. A wrong guess at a part can cost more than proper diag.
