Last year I picked up a 9" rear at the local junkyard. I cleaned and painted the housing and installed it. I quickly discovered that the rear has a bad pinion bearing. After months of driving it on short trips near home, the bearing noise is getting worse. Last night I pulled my old rear apart so I could swap the third member into the new housing. I discovered that 2/3 of the ring gear is rusted! The part that was above the oil line is covered in rust on both faces of each tooth.
Last time I was at the junkyard, they had several newer trucks with 10.25 rears, and a few Sterlings also. Is the 9" rear the biggest rear that Ford made with the 5 on 5.5" lug pattern?
Also, does anyone know where I can find a decent rebuilt 9" third member at a decent price? I have looked online and everything that I found was $1k (rebuilt used) up to almost $2k (new with various LS carriers).
For many years, the 9" was the only rearend used under the F100/F150. It was phased out for the 8.8", which is not as solid in my opinion.
Your best option may best to find a local differential shop, and have them go thru one of the 3rd members you already have. Usually a 9" can be gone thru with new bearings and a ring/pinion for under $500 for a stock open diff unit. That is with you carrying in the unit, and doing the install yourself.
I may give a local shop a try and let them rebuild my old 3rd member. I am a bit hesitant to go that route because it is hard to find someone who really knows how to assemble and set up a rear correctly. I think I will hit the local junkyard Saturday morning and see what is there. If I strike out, I will look for a shop to rebuild one of mine.
