Bed Wood
I have a wood in mind it's hardwood called Pedra and is used for decks and it comes in 1x5.5" 8ft lenghts.
Not sure on how to finish it but thinking of oil and wax.
I've read some of the threads on bed wood but didn't see anything on Pedra wood, the wood salesmen said it was very hard.
I noticed that Julies Cool F1 has wrote lots on finishing wood and wondered
if she has had any exsperence with this wood.
Many thanks.
Neil
Oil and wax is ok, But I'd do Oil (exterior WATCO), Spar, Wax (Trewax). Otherwise you wil be refinishing every spring like on a teak boat deck that is just oiled.
I just used a water based Varithane Spar on my Sedan Trunk formy trailer the other day for the first time. It's different (didn't flow like an oil, and I'm not sure whether I liked it or not), but dries fast, very hard like an acrylic instead of a varnish, and sanded very well. It seamed to hold up in the rain the other day too but I'm not sure about the sun yet. If you use oil under spar you will have to use oil/poly base spar.
And, I have a question for you. I'm not sure of this in the Mercury's, but doesn't your 48 "6 1/2 Ft. Pick-up Box" have a metal over wood bed floor?
Pictures of both the wood and the truck would be nice!
Welcome to FTE by the way!
Ipe is so dense that installing it will use up a lot of drills and saw blades but it will last forever. Very heavy though.
When you get a moment (before or after you do your intro) maybe you could enter your location code under the user CP. Mercs come from Canada but not all live there (right Wayne?) and it sometimes it makes a diff to the info we have.
For example, on 51-52 f1’s with wood in the bed it would appear that there is a difference in the number of wood pieces and metal strips between Canada and US production. Of course the only one that this is of any significance to are a couple of sled dogs and someone from Canada trying to order a wood kit.
You will need around 8 good boards 3/4" x 5 3/4" x 78 " Suggest Alphatic Urethane for the finish coat .It is a 2 part material that is super hard and will not be affected by the sun .The more coats you apply and wet sand in between the better it looks .See pics of bed in firstriders gallery . Hope this helps .

I live in the city of Surrey, B.C. Canada which is just on the other side of the border from Blaine WA. My truck is a 1948 Mercury that is a full custom, chopped, lowered and louvered. Has 1953 Buick headlights canted and a rippled front bumber and 1958 Ford car taillights frenched and canted. I'm still building but had it on the road last Fall and will be back out again, soon as I get the box back on. I'm in the middle of lowering it another 3 inches.

With the truck that color, maybe Purple Heart or Canary Wood would lookk nice! Maybe Purple heart with a 1/8" centerline down each board with White Maple inlayed!
Your truck is VERY Art Deco - Like a 37 Cord. Something with Art Deco or "Machine Age" design would be a perfect finishing touch. I really don't see bags of concrete piled into the back of that!----I HOPE!

Reminds of a time I took the little lady of 14yrs. to a local chain eatery .They have alot of seafood on the menu and the name sounds similiar to Rock Lobster .They screwed up the order , served the appetizer after the main course and the young male server said " After that drink you are having driving a car may be out of the question ." I said " Sit down here young fella and let me tell you a couple of stories from back in the dark days ." Some of the things I told him about the party days ( weekends ) when the van club craze was popular had him in utter disbelief .We have not visited that restaurant chain since .

The colour is the base coat that was sprayed on yrs ago and is now just another layer of block sanding material. I'm presently thinking of painting it black and running flames over the the entire truck. I just got a set of skirts and can hardly wait to get the box back on and set them in place. I love skirts on custom trucks and cars, but they have to be tail draggers.
This truck may not haul concrete but does haul engines around, it's our shop truck. I have a '77 F250 that i'm using for now till I get the '48 back on the road.
