Auto vs. Manual/Lock Hubs

I have a 2002 F350 Lariat Diesel 4wd. I admittedly have not engaged the 4wd system in years, so no suprise that the hub locks are frozen. I began my diagnosis and suddenly couldn't remember for certain if I have auto lock hubs or manual lock hubs. The logos have long since worn off, so I am inquiring to see what other indicators I might look for to help me correctly identify my set up. I do see what appears to be a vacuum line going to each hub so I am leaning toward the auto lock but I seem to vaguely remember seeing "Free" and "Lock" on the hubs when I bought the truck in 2003. Any reassurance would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to FTE

Typically, an ESOF system= auto hubs, and a shifter on floor= manual hubs. If you have a vac line, that means you have auto hubs as well. Hope that helps.

You're lucky in that you can swap in some Warn Premiums and never have hub problems again.

Thanks, I appreciate the information. That is the way I was leaning but it is good to have confirmation.

My 2002 F250 has the Auto/Manual hubs. Set to Auto they function as a normal automatic hub with the ESOF, but you also had the option of manually locking them into the Lock position. I suppose in case the vaccum isn't working. I think Ford still offers that same setup on the new SD hubs. I believe that counterclockwise is Auto and clockwise is Lock.

Easy way to know if you have manual hubs - your transfer case shifter is on the floor.

If you have vacuum lines on that year, they were AUTO/LOCK. No vacumm, lock/free

Correct including the rotation of the for the hub between and "auto and lock".
