Have you heard about packing the oil pump with vaseline before installing to help it prime? It is supposed to disolve with the hot oil but I am a bit leary of this. I would hate to have a blob of vaseline clog a lifter on start up.
I would reccomend that you buy a primer or make one out of an old dizzy shaft with the correct size socket on the end. Right before you fire the motor turn the oil pump to build pressure and then reinstall dizzy and crank it up.
The way I primed my oil pump was to take apart another distributor from another engine and cut the top off and run it with a 1/2 drive drill untill the guage stopped gaining pressure, then i fired the engine up

As the guys above has stated, pre-oiling the engine is a must, in fact I'll add that I will prime, turn the engine 1/2 turn, prime again. Some mains are only half grooved and buy turning the engine I feel all mains and rods get oil. As far as your pump goes, we will always dissassemble a new pump and clean and check for material, chips or the sort. In the racing applications, we will machine and radius different areas or even even apply a friction reducing coating, then assemble with the same assemble lube. Permatex make the greatest assy. lube.
all that's true sure 'nuff, but all you need to prime an oil pump is an ounce of oil down the hole where you bolt it on and turn the pump through a little. the vaseline is a PITA unless you're taking it apart to clean it anyway. not a bad idea to check for someone's bad idea of a joke. and make sure the pick-up tube is tightly sealed to the pump body
