Please help. I bought a used 93 ford bronco v8, 351, 5.8L last year. I have already have had to replace the engine and several other parts. recently the truck started to shake really bad when going between 30 and 50 mph and making a loud noise. I thought that maybe I needed new shocks. Well I took it to a mechanic and he said that it was my rear differential. I bought new seals and barrings. That is not the problem it sounds worse. Now he is telling me that I need to a new pinion gear or a whole new rear end. What is going on. I do not know anything about cars and it seems like I keep getting ripped off. Any suggestions. I love the Bronco but it is taking all of my cash flow. Plus I am still paying for it. If anyone knows what the problem is or who I can contact, please let me know
It may be just your u-joints or maybe your drive-shaft is bent
determine at which rpm that it starts shaking then manually shift it thru the gears achieving that rpm to determine if it is still shaking at that rpm if it doesnt then you need to replace the u-joints also try driving the truck in 1st gear at about 25mph and step on the gas and let off a few times rapidly if you hear a clanging noise its definately your u-joints replace them
A mechanic tried to pull this one on my parents. Tried to tell them that their vibration was coming from the rear axle and that it would cost $125 to inspect and much more to fix. I went over and looked at it and both joints on the driveshaft were fried. A better way to check your u-joints is to put the vehicle in nuetral and apply the parking brake. If the parking brake does not work get it on flat ground or park it up against something to take the stress off of the driveline. Then go underneath and see iff you can feel any play in the joints.
I'm with BOSS_358 on this one 100 percent. Chek by hand yourself.
Also, if there happens to be play on the pinion, make sure that the pinion nut isnt just loose. My dana 60 used to whine on decel. One time I decided to pull a trailer and deceling down large grades lossened the nut even more and gave me a very bad vibration. I though my rear end was torched when there was 80-90 oil all over EVERYTHING! But I dropped the driveshaft, looked a little closer and fixed it myself for free. Always look yourself before payin someone. Good luck, Keep us posted!
Up here it's cold, sunny, and all of our snow melted on thursday. But the plus is the sled doesn't work right now and the 4 wheeler does. I think I'm gonna go out and give the dogs a workout soon. Just sayin Hi from Mille Lacs County. Have you been in the Minnesota forum at all? Can't recall if I have seen you in there.
