ok this weekend in my 92 Flareside im swapping my 230k mile 351W for a fresher 351W and i was just wondering what are some things i can do to make this swap smoother and almost flawless.....
im for sure gonna take a ton of pics to make sure i get all the connections back correctly. and will be labeling all of the wiring harness that i have to disconnect so that i will get it back correct. but other than that what else can i do?
If it was me I might drop the oil pan on the new engine to clean it and check the oil pickup gauze. I would check every freeze plug and might replace any that look even a little suspect. I might also replace the rear main crankshaft seal.
None of that would make the swap easier but might give peace of mind.
Just my thoughts.
Good luck for the swap.
Having done this a year ago, my advice is be diligent about the labeling (masking tape and sharpie works great), ziploc bags and sharpie for bolts, and (most importantly) an adjustable sling on the engine hoist. My swap probably took a day longer than it should have because we were having such a hard time lining up the engine and tranny.
