my 94 e150 with the 4.9l engine has about 203,000 miles and ive had the rear end oil changed once ....but how long until i should have to have a new rear end put in ? how do i know if its going bad ?
The one thing that may wear out first are the outer axel bearings on the 8.8. The shaft runs on the roller bearings directly and once the shaft starts to wear they can go quickly. If not caught soon enough it may result in having to replace the shafts with the bearings. Changing the fluid every couple of years is easy and cheap. I use Moble 1 but any brand name gear lube with the correct weight will work.
The axel on my truck is a Dana with full floating axels. The only way the thing could fail is if I let it run dry.
A differential can last the life of the vehicle if you maintain it, don't overload the vehicle, and watch how you drive. However, a common misconception is that people think they need to change the entire diff if something goes wrong. You wouldn't replace the engine if the plugs went bad. It's a good idea to change all of the bearings every so often depending on how you use the van. For example, an 8.8 bearing kit will cost 72.40 from us, plus about 21 bucks for axle bearings and seals. Small price to pay for piece of mind. The only issue is labor, if you've never done diff bearings before, it's not something you can just usually figure out in the driveway. Good luck!
