Why did my speedometer stop working

I just got my truck back from having the transmission rebuilt and the speedo wasnt working. I havent called the garage back yet but I was wondering is the speedo in my truck like the trans of old that were mechanical or is this thing electric and maybe they just forgot to plug it in?
