I went to town yesterday and when I came out the store my girl friend started it as I was hopping in when it started it puffed out a great big cloud of smoke and it never has done that so I looked under the truck every thing is coverd in oil the engine valley is full of oil the hpop is leaking but its not the culprit the truck leaked two qaurts of oil in an hour of driving home the hpop is just a little drip what seals should I look at I'm mechanically inclined but never owned or worked on diesel before so any input would be great thanks guys

Clean engine and find leak.
If it is the non serviceable plug then it will take a few days to fill the valley, but then it will drip all over everything. I just did my non servicable plug two weeks ago. Guzzle (diesel orings dot com) has a kit for the non serviceable plug. go ahead and order the fuel line sleeve kit, as well as the HPOP to motor gasket, and the IPR orings. Its not as bad a job as you think. Just don't lose the little ball, or the edge filter out of the HPOP.

I can't down load it I don't have a pc.I have a black berry. would that be causing the smoke out the tall pipe though ? The hpop is leaking at the back cover were there's a little snap ring but its just a slight drip

It's probably not leaking there. Any leak on the HPOP will travel back to that snap ring and give the appearance that the large plate is leaking.

Oil out the exhaust makes me suspicious of the turbo journal going out. Take the turbo inlet off and see if you have any play in the compressor wheel. Even better, take the clamp off the downpipe and see if you have oil in the exhaust housing.

Nothing special about working on a diesel, in many ways it is much simpler than a gasser.

Attemp it, you really cant screw this up. Bobs directions are spot on, and if youve read around this forum for awhile, you are probably familiar with all the parts under the hood, but you just haven't had an excuse to take them off and see how they work. Joel, I would be happy to PM you my cell number, and could talk you through the whole thing. The HPOP can be off, repaired, and replaced in less than 2 hrs. (although it is recomended that the locktite cure for 24 hrs before re adding fluids.)

What color is the smoke, and what does it smell like

I agree with Bob, loosen downpipe clamp and look for OILY residue, not dry soot, but drippy oil.

I also pulled the inter cooler pipes and there was oil in those along with the intake pipe that goes from the air box to the turbo. I ordered the ccv mod from caly along with o ring kits and 6637 intake. How much oil is normal to come out of the crank case vent ???

There shouldn't be a ton of oil in the intercooler tubes but definately enough to make things really messy/oily.

It has been a long time since I did mine and I have pretty low mileage but that does not sound all that bad to me but hopefully someone with more experience chimes in.
