Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test Here is a link on how to check for trouble codes. Might be worth doing. you might also check for restricted exhaust gas flow (plugged cat).
Might also be a good idea to post this on the `87-`96 F-Series page as someone else there may have had a similar problem.

If your '87 is like mine, you will need to use a small test light or analog voltmeter (or code reader) to read the codes. For some reason, Ford did not wire the check engine light in the dash, even though there is a spot for it.
