I was wondering if it was possible to put a 390 and a 4 speed out of a 74 F-350 into an 81 2wd without major modifications?
Any help would be appreciated
Steve
If you can get ahold of that 74 that the engine is from, then sure, all you'll need is its motor mounts, cross member and driveshaft, if they are both short wheelbase or long wheelbase.
Also you'll need an upgraded radiator, and you'll have to hunt for a 360 with electronic ignition, or, you could get a pertronix type ignition and wire that in, and skip factory peices totally.
Its definetly do-able, if you are willing to commit to the project.
If only it was that easy... Since the FE was never offered in an 80-up, and the 79 down frame is different, plan on building your own engine mounts. The oil pan could pose a problem, you'll need a rear sump pan, so, that'll have to come from a 4x4....
If the 390 is a real good motor, go for it... If not, evaluate selling it and dropping in something that came in this Chassis, like maybe a 429 or 460...
