Have you checked the fluid level. Also is it red or brown, and does it smell burnt?

A filter change and fresh fluid should help. Drain the torque convertor if you can, but don't have it flushed.

More than likely not the transmission.
You need to have the codes read in the computer to see if you have a bad TP, TR, VSS input or the shift solenoid pack.

If it is not the solenoid pack then it sounds like either the TR sensor is bad or the speed input to the computer is missing.
You can check the TR sensor with an ohm meter at the computer plug. The speed input is a little harder as you would have to look at the output from the PSOM with a scope or a meter on the AC scale.
You could also try unplugging the RABS and the Speed Control modules and see if is OK then.
What is your Speedometer needle doing, is it steady?

If you fix your speedometer then more than likely you will fix the transmission.

Could be it or the wiring and plugs to it.
But it is the cheapest place to start.

I agree, if the speedo is not functioning correctly, the trans will not shift as it should.
