What do you think???????
1977 Ford 460 big block motor complete with 4 barrel carb, starter, altenator, power steering pump, A/C compressor, distributer, everything is there and engine does run.
Of course I risk engine being smoked since it's pulled. Would it be worth parting out in that case?

You can start it and test run it like dlburch said, but it's not always as easy as hooking up a fuel line and a battery. Depending on what kind of gauges it had, you may have to block off some ports. The P/S pump is going to puke as soon as it is started, and you don't want to run it very long without fluid in it. I wouldn't even give much credence to the results (other than the fact that it does/doesn't start and does/doesn't burn oil) because there could be any number of other problems that won't necessarily show up upon a short test run.
All in all, though, I think it would be worth the money if you want a 460 in your truck. If you don't, I wouldn't bother. 460s are very common around here and running engines are being sold for between $200 and $400 all the time. I could have a shed full of them, but I have no use for them and I wouldn't get my money back from parting them out.
