i have a 78 xlt. with a 400. i want to make it more of a street trk and have a 71 with a 302. so i was thinking of taking the 302 and building it into the boss engine and putting it in with a newer transmission ( hopefuly)a 5 speed. was wanting to know if anyone has done this and if the boss would move the trk very good
I have the same year and plan on doing the same thing, I would just build the 400, I know alot of people don't like them but built right they can be down right nasty.
For the trans I am probably going with a C6 and getting rid of the manual, I love stick shifts for off road and such but a well built auto with a shift kit makes it nice on the street.
i would like to have the 5 spd tranny to make it more of a hwy trk and the 400 will only bolt to a c6, the 400 would be fine if my trk was a 4x4 and needed all the torque and low gearing.
I have owned five 400 engines in five different trucks. Drove the crap out of them and they asked for more. I never heard of the "myth" that they weren't the best engines until this website came along. I had one in my '79 Bronco that was used for 4 wheelin out in the nevada desert in 100+ degrees. Just a few easy bolt-on mods, and it will kill a 302, if it doesn't already do so.
I seem to remember going 90 on the highway with the 400/c6.
