Iam restoring a 73 f250 camper special and am wondering what the step bumpers on these trucks came coated in? Was it chrome because i was told the step bumpers could not be rechromed because of the diamondplating on the top, or were they powder coated nd if so what color?

MY 78 was "Argent" which is kind of a matte silver color. I am planning on coating it with a bedliner type hard black plastic coating. It will be much tougher than powdercoat. Not the spray on stuff that you get at the parts house. I will get it done at the same time as I get the bed done by Line-x or some sort of company. My neighbor just had his new Dodge truck bed coated and I am letting him see how it holds up... Powdercoat wasn't available back in the dark ages.

I have a 73 f100 that is still in all original coondition, almost 100%. The rear bumper is a step type with the diamond plating like you mentioned. My bumper is also painted silver or whatever kind of coating they used then. Front bumper is the push type, chrome.

I had the Rhino type coating on my bed several years ago. Company I used was called Ultimate Lining but I think they all use the same stuff. It's absolutely great! Even got rid of a lot of noise. I do however run a tonno cover. If you get the stuff color tinted I've heard the sun will fade it. For Black you can renew it with "Forever Black". It's like shoe dye in a quart can. Got it at the same place after the paint shop got catalized primer all over it.

I have seen the stock step bumpers with the diamond plate top chrome. Mostly the ones I have seen are on 78/79 xlt models. But They are definatly chrome. Most of those bumpers were painted argent or silver.

My 79 F-150 Custom Explorer has the chrome step bumper with the diamond plate top.
