tranny question

I have a 78 f250 with the 400 and C6 tranny and on the driverside of it just behind the linkage there is what looks like a wire connected behind it any clues as to what it is thanks in advance

Is it bolted on behind the actual linkage as in using the same bolts? If so thats for the nuetral safety switch and your back up lights. If you look behind the air cleaner at the firewall the wires plug in there to the harness.

stupid question could the backup light side go bad but the safety switch side still work sorry to sound stupid but working on fords is new to me

Not real sure to be honest. Your reverse lights out? Take the tailight out. Inside should be a ground wire held on by a sheetmetal screw. Check that out and see if everything is ok. If its good then chances are the switch is bad.
