Has anyone been successful at disassembling this stupid thing without breaking the retaining clips? Lots of loose change in mine, I can't even open the door for the storage bin all the way. Its on there nice and tight and I really don't want to break any of those retainers if I can help it.
On my Ranger there are four (4) screws on the bottom of the inside floor that will allow you to remove the innards. I can't recall for sure if you have to pull up the cloth on the bottom or ifI just found the heads ond unscrewed them.
I am actually tackling this today with the one from my 97 F250. Its going to be a slow process, I am going to take my time and make sure I find out exactly how it comes apart. Ill try to take pictures as I go.
I will tell you right now, there is no way to get that top off without breaking the clips. I read on another forum that those tops were meant to never come off. There is a platform just behind the cup holders that once I clean out the change I am going to put a couple pieces of 3M double sided tape to hold it down. Gently lift up on the lid and it will start to come up. I cleaned out the change in about 2 minutes and it is already back together

There is an article in the Baz pages, I tried to follow it, but with no luck, I broke the retaining clips, and I jus install a pair or black screws in the upper front part of the lateral sides of the console, similiar to thouse used in some parts of the dash (self drilled), and was OK for me, next time when I need to disassembly, peace of cake.
Bah. I WILL figure out a way to disassemble that bugger without breaking something! If someone would be so kind as to snap a pic of where the lock tabs are and what they look like I would be greatly appreciative.
they are plastic hooks that snap into holes, any upward pressure and they break off. I tried for hours to see if I could get a screwdriver in there to press them back but they are too low.
Im not pulling it up again but there are 2 under the front rail, one on either side of the cup holders, 2 more equally spaced down the side and 2 on the back rail. I didnt even pull out the back. Just hinged the front up to pull out the change.
Well... I tried and failed... miserably. Pete if you get ambitious and try to do this w/o breaking anything the only advice I can give you is you will need a pick with a long but stout end on it. The retainers on the upper cover protrude about 1/2" or so into the console itself and you will need something that can reach down in the hole and try to pop them loose. I ended up breaking all the retainers off before I was able to see good enough to figure out what was going on. I tried pulling on the retainers with a pick slid under the top piece of the console but couldn't get them to budge. A little E6000 adhesive smeared around... its not going anywhere now, retainers or not!
I had 3 retainers along the front edge and down each side FWIW.
