Hello all I am from 6.0 land but I am going to be buying a 1997 f350 with the 7.3di turbo engine it has 186k miles it is 4x4 reg cab and has a small lift I was wondering the basics of these engines/ transmissions this truck is a automatic, for example I know the 6.0 problems like studs tuners egr oil cooler etc. what do I need to look out for on the 7.3 and Im pretty sure the auto trannys for these trucks is the e40d if anyone can put some input in I would greatly appreciate it

Welcome! and keep going towards the light. Step away from the dark side and come on in.

JK- Everything has it's typical problems. This is just a great bunch of guys. I guess some of the typical things on the 7.3 are:
the cam position sensor (CPS)-get a spare and keep it with you
stock Downpipe - has to go
air intake - easy improvement
EGT's - no pyrometer stock
tranny cooler -more like tranny cooker
typical maintenance stuff like:
fuel leaks in the valley-easy fix
vac pump no brakes--nuther pretty easy fix
lift pump -more wrenchin' and readin' up before starting

Anything else guys?

Again -Welcome home!

Welcome. I too am learning the ins and outs of the 7.3. These guys are the best. So far I've had no problem too great to be taken care of in my driveway for more than a few beers, some good music, and some advice from here. Oh yeah, a little cash too!

1. CPS (camshaft position sensor), get an extra now
2. CPS
3. When 1 & 2 don't seem right lose the off brand, go to International and see numbers 1 & 2.
4. Check your fuel filter during initial check and treat appropriately. Not that the 6.0s do but the 7.3s don't like the wonderful ULS diesel.
5. Steel rear tank, watch for rust and neither tank fills well. Fuel tank vent or anti-foam mod.

Easy but overlooked stuff. Again WELCOME.
