ABS light

Took my truck on it's first good trip tonight, about 250 miles. The truck ran great, but about 70 miles from home all of a sudden the ABS and Tow/Haul light came on, Odometer went to dashes (-------), and the speedometer went to zero. fifteen seconds later everything went back to normal, but the ABS light stayed on.

I didn't mess with it when I got home, but after searching it looks like this points to the VSS in the rear, does that sound right? First thing tomorrow I'll put my scanner on it to double check, but is there anything else I should look for?

Thanks

ok, it has the 0500 VSS code.

Now it's not a constant code, that was only a freeze frame. Should I clear it and see what happens, or just go for a new one?

And can a bad VSS mess anything up? I'm taking the truck away tomorrow and don't want to worry about it.

I had the same problem. I replaced the VSS, but it didn't fix it. Then I tested the front ABS sensors by unplugging the connection that goes to the harness, spinning the wheel, and looking for a reading on my volt meter. One was out, so I replaced it and it was all good. My truck is standard though and I didn't have the problems of gauges going to zero.
