Advice on various mods...

I'm trying to become a more enthusiastic Ford Truck Enthusiast. In doing so, I want to start modding my truck a little bit at a time. So my question for you guys is: Where should I start? Now, keep in mind that I am a young paramedic with two boys under 2 so I'm not exactly loaded to say the least. I'm thinking of starting with the air intake. Can I put a 6637 on a 96 and if so how? I also want to do one of the diesel anti-foaming mods to my tanks or even put in a 38 gallon in the front. Exhaust is high on my list as well but a little more costly. Any advice and instructions will be appreciated. Also, feel free to make suggestions regarding other mods as well. Lets hear it fellas! Thanks in advance.

The first most important things are gauges (to keep an eye on things), intake (6637 or a tymar will do the trick, look at riffraffdiesel.com), exhaust with a 3" downpipe. Those are the most important things and should be priority. After that you can start going down your list of things like chip or anti foam mod.

If your on a budget then do a search on here for some cheap diy mods like 10k mod, 140v idm mod, stuff like that.

6637 intake kit from Riff Raff (Around $70), 3" downpipe ($85 from Bean's Diesel), Tranny Cooler, and Gauges.

I'd say those are the best mods to start with. Let it breathe better and keep things cool. After that get into power mods like chips and stuff.

Also look into the 140v IDM mod.

I don't know of a 38 gallon front tank, but I'm doing the 38 gallon rear tank soon.

As far as anti-foaming and filling faster check out the fuel vent mod. I did my front tank and it's awesome!

Just do what mods you can a little at a time. And just check up on the site often. I'm always learning something new just reading through other peoples posts.

I'm slowly getting my truck where I want it to be. And post some pics! I wanna see your truck!

Thanks for the start guys. Yeah something I left off was that I plan to get a tranny temp guage on soon. I'm going to be servicing it this month so I'll probably just do it then. I changed my avatar to a pic of my truck and will try to get some more as it progresses.

I would also get an EGT gauge to watch exhaust gas temps and a boost gauge just for something to watch

If you can't swing a full exhaust, you can always find some sections of pipe (or buy delete pipes) to get rid of at least the cat- you don't need it and getting rid of it will help with EGT's. You can also get rid of the muffler if you want.

can't rep ya brownie. =(

Good suggestions here.
There are some other suggestion threads as well if you can find them.

You can get gauges from clay, and the 6637 kit.
I have an article on my website for it, Midnight Mods, and you can see what you get in the 6637 kit from clay.

No worries William...

I found gauges at Diesel Manor for a good deal. $250 for Boost, EGT, and a pillar pod.

Should I get a 3" downpipe asap or just wait and do the whole turbo back exhaust at the same time? Or does it even matter?

Are you looking to do a kit? IMO i would just get a 4" turbo back kit and do that at the same time.

It doesn't really matter if you do just the downpipe or the whole exhaust. It's harder to find a downpipe back exhaust kit for our trucks, so I'd just buy the whole turbo back kit and do downpipe and full exhaust all at once.

Also, on the different 6637 intake kits, do they come with something to support the filter element itself? I know the Tymar has a band with a anchor spot but I haven't seen anything on the kits say from riff raff nor the guys that build their own.

Most guys don't even use that mounting band. Mine was originally a Tymar and had the band on it, but I got my new filter from Riff Raff and I just let it sit on the inner fender. No problems with it at all.
