Low Power/Throttle Response

I have a 1997 7.3 with a ZF-5 Trans, 270K. It's completely stock except for a K&N Filter which I have heard is junk but don't have the money for an intake right now. The problem I am having is lack of power. I have had problems in the past with my CPS and have got that cleared up (I hope). My truck idles and starts good, just when you are cruising down the road and you give it throttle there is little to no response. I have no check engine lights or anything on. I checked my fuel filter and it looks good. Maybe my turbo is not spooling up? It could be a fuel issue but I'm leaning more towards turbo problems. How do I know if my turbo is functioning properly?

when is the last time you change the fuel filter and have you ever cleaned the FPR screen in the fuel bowl. if you take the furl filter out lool in the bowl on the driver side there is a little hole with a screen in it take a Q-TIP with the cotton cut off and rub the screen soft to clean it

I'm going to change the fuel filter ASAP. I looked at it but don't know the last time it was changed. Thanks for the tip on the screen, I'll be sure to clean it. It has less than 1,000 miles since the last oil change.

change the fuel filter frist. And as the K&N take it off before you do have turbo problemsand do a 6637 intake from riffraff diesel performance he is one of our great sponsors for FTE they are cheaper then you think

One thing to check is your MAP sensor hose to intake. Make sure the hose is actually connected at both ends. At the intake end it gets hot and the hose can crack/ break. If so the turbo will never spool up because the MAP is reporting no boost to the PCM. Also remove the hose and blow into the "cleaner side" MAP side. They have been known to clog up.

I changed my fuel filter and cleaned the screen. The screen was super dirty, the fuel filter looked good but I replaced it anyways. I also ordered the 6637 and I'll be getting it on Monday, I'm excited. However, my truck is still running no better than before.

Hussler- I didn't see your post until now but I will definitely check that out. It almost does seem like the turbo isn't spooling up.

Thanks again for the help guys!

Hey to all from a first poster(been browsing a while) To fordpride-what turbo problems dores a K&N filter cause? Read your post and ordered one from riffraff. My truck seems down on power also, some friends thinking turbo problems. 155k all original turbo, injectors, glow plugs, injector pump-everything. Thanks.

Also you can try taking your intake tubing off and check the turbo wheel for play in the shaft or chipping/pitting on the turbo wheel.
A little in and out play is ok, but up, down and side to side is not.

The K&N filters are known for letting dust and other particles through because they don't fit as well as others, mostly in the stock air box but I've heard of problems with their intakes also. The dust particles that get through can cause pitting and wear on the turbo wheel and shaft.

you will like the 6637 from riffraff.

just for a little info the powerstroke does not have a injection pump it has a fuel pump or called a supply pump the injectors work off of high pressure oil from the HPOP (high presssure oil pump)

Injector/turbo life

Thanks, guys. So, with 155k and all original, other than K&N, should injectors or anything else be checked as possible reasons for low power? Will check turbo play when 6637 arrives. Will build a leak tester as I saw in another thread, is due for fuel filter, will clean little screen as in another thread, will check map hose for cracks. I'm seeing a lot of oil?/fuel? around turbo/ rear top of engine any ideas where to look first for cause? As a newbie, I'm in the dark as to a lot of the abbreviations used in forum, any dictionaries around?
